Join this four-week online course exploring experimental approaches to textiles and weaving in contemporary art. Each session includes a 40-minute lecture highlighting artists who use fibers, off-loom processes, and 3D weaving conceptually and sculpturally, followed by a group discussion and project sharing. Designed for artists and makers working with or curious about textiles, this course fosters conversation, reflection, and connection across fiber-based practices. We will look at artists like Alan Shields, Miguel Arzabe, Dienke Dekker, Katy Kirbach, Zoe Paul, and so many more.
Please note that this is not a techniques class, and there will be no demonstrations. This four-week class will be conducted in a lecture and discussion format, serving as a survey of the subject.
The class will cover both traditional and non-traditional methodologies and materials of weaving, including weaving as painting, dimensional weaving such as new basketry, topics in off-loom textile weaving, experimental fibercraft, and contemporary weaving with association to broader historical and cultural contexts.
For our third class session, we will have a special guest artist giving a presentation on their work and practice. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and have discussions with the visiting artist.
*Classes will be recorded, and students will have access to each recording for one month after the class. Students can also watch the recording asynchronously if they cannot attend the online class. A Zoom link and a Google Drive Folder link will be emailed to participants a few days before class begins.
