Make Yourself Known: DIY Self-Promotion & Communications for Artists
Instructor: Anders Zanichkowsky
Format: In-person, 3-hour workshop
Date(s): October 20, 2026
Day/Time: Tuesday, 5:30 - 8:30 PM
Every working artist is an entrepreneur, but few of us get trained to run a business. Many of us need help to support our studio practice, but what’s the best way to ask for it? And what if you really hate using social media?
Now more than ever, artists need our own independent tools and skills for getting the word out about our work, and getting that work funded. This workshop will take you through the fundamentals of self-promotion and personal fundraising: from different ways to show people what you do, to combating Imposter Syndrome, to launching your own DIY crowdfunding campaign complete with newsletters and press releases. You will leave with a plan for very manageable projects, tailored to your own needs, and a renewed belief in the importance of your work.

Anders Zanichkowsky is an artist, writer, educator, and the owner of Burial Blankets: handwoven shrouds for natural burial meant for a lifetime of reflection and enjoyment. Their professional development workshops are rooted in their scrappy, DIY approach to being an artist-entrepreneur, drawing on two decades of community organizing, fundraising, and communications work. Anders has been an artist-in-residence with The Arctic Circle in Svalbard, Røst AiR in Norway, and the Chicago Park District. They have received numerous awards for their studio work, public art projects, and international research, including a DCASE Individual Artist Grant and a SPARK grant from the Chicago Artists Coalition. They have also raised over $13,00 for their art practice through DIY crowdfunding campaigns, most recently for their forthcoming experimental film "Ordinary Time." Anders graduated from Hampshire College and has an MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
