Get Felt Up: Soft Sculpture with Nicole Havekost.

$360.00

Instructor: Nicole Havekost
Format: In Person, 2-day workshop
Date(s): March 28 + 29
Day/Time: Saturday + Sunday, 10 am to 4 pm both days

Participants will begin their soft sculpture journey with simple hand-sewing techniques to explore the kinds of mark-making systems available with needle and thread. Uncomplicated armature techniques and both additive and subtractive sculptural processes will be used to create a three-dimensional form; participants will then drape and piece felt to this form, organically pinning and fitting the felt and stitching it to shape. Participants will be encouraged to play and experiment with shape, form, and scale. Fabric manipulation techniques, including appliqué, patchwork, and additive embellishments, will also be discussed and demonstrated.

Participants will be introduced to contemporary fiber artists making sculptural works in a digital presentation. This workshop is ideal for artists looking to explore sculptural practices with fiber in their work, as well as beginners interested in learning new materials. Bring your imagination and be ready to play! Each student will receive a half yard of wool felt, armature wire, and masking tape. Additional materials, including limited thread colors, scissors, and hand sewing needles, will be provided for use during the class.

What to bring: a favorite thimble, additional fabric scissors (less than 4 inches from pivot point if you are flying with them), embellishment materials (beads, buttons, feathers, etc.) to adorn the felt surface, or any other materials you are excited to incorporate into your sculpture.

Provided: Sewing Needles, pins, scissors, needle nose pliers.
