Artist-in-Residence Program and Application

The Weaving Workshop is delighted to offer one-month Artist Residency opportunities to three artists each month who work alongside each other in our studio. This residency is designed for artists seeking dedicated studio time within a vibrant community of makers while contributing to the life of our artist-run school through studio stewardship and public engagement.

What You Receive

  • 24-hour access to the studio throughout your residency, except during scheduled workshops and events

  • A dedicated shelf for storing your artwork and materials

  • Use of our studio amenities, equipment, and shared tools

  • Membership in a welcoming community of artists and makers

  • An opportunity to showcase your work in the studio at the conclusion of your residency, accompanied by a closing reception

    Housing: Please note that The Weaving Workshop does not provide housing as part of the Artist Residency Program. We welcome artists traveling from outside the Chicago area; however, applicants should plan accordingly and are responsible for arranging and covering the cost of their own travel and accommodations for the duration of the residency. We do not offer stipends at this time.

What You Contribute

Artists-in-Residence are asked to contribute approximately 5–8 work hours of studio stewardship each week, typically over two scheduled days. During these hours, residents are encouraged to work on their own artistic practice while helping foster an engaging, welcoming environment for visitors and supporting the daily operations of the studio.

As a public-facing organization, The Weaving Workshop believes that one of the most meaningful ways to experience contemporary art and craft is by engaging with working artists. Residents should be comfortable sharing their creative process, answering questions from visitors, and participating in the life of the studio.

Studio stewardship is designed to be flexible and collaborative. Residents are encouraged to choose responsibilities that align with their interests, skills, and availability. Many stewardship activities can happen while you are working on your own artistic practice in the studio.

The goal is not simply to complete tasks, but to contribute to the culture of a shared creative space.

We will work together to create a schedule that supports both your practice and the needs of the studio. Studio stewardship responsibilities may include:

  • Working in the studio during assigned public hours and engaging with visitors

  • Welcoming guests and answering questions about your work and The Weaving Workshop

  • Assisting with light class setup and cleanup, including arranging tables, organizing materials, and putting away tools

  • Helping maintain shared studio spaces by sweeping floors, wiping work surfaces, organizing communal tools, and keeping the studio ready for classes

  • Preparing workshop materials as needed, such as organizing supplies or cutting weaving materials

  • Participating in at least one public program during the residency, such as an artist talk, demonstration, open studio, or workshop assistance

  • Contributing occasional photographs or brief updates documenting your residency for our newsletter or social media

Residents are expected to respect the shared nature of the studio by keeping personal work and materials neatly stored on their designated shelves when not in use and leaving their workspace clean and ready for the next artist or class.
